Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that is typically characterized by impulsive behavior, over-activity, and inattentiveness. The behavior issues associated with ADHD often interfere with a youngster’s academic progress. However, there are some strategies parents can use to help their kids succeed. For example, clearly define your expectations and break down the task into small, achievable chunks that the child can complete successfully. Since some children with ADHD tend to procrastinate on homework, it’s a good idea to have them take a break when the work is going well. This way, they’ll be more willing to dive back into the work later. It is also extremely important to find a way to arrange the daily routine and both positive and corrective consequences so that what is expected is clearly understood. This can help take emotion out of difficult situations and let the consequences of the child’s actions speak for themselves.
