Extinction
Extinction refers to an ABA therapy method that works to fade away and eventually eliminate unwanted behaviors. When an unwanted behavior no longer occurs, we say it’s extinct. Extinction involves withholding reinforcement for a previously reinforced behavior, resulting in the reduction and extinction of that behavior. For example, you no longer give your child the iPad during mealtimes even when asked, resulting in requesting the iPad less. Patience and consistency is key.
