What is Stereotypy?
Stereotypy is a word we use to describe any behavior, verbal or physical, that is repetitive, can be controlled, and serves no functional purpose. Examples include hand flapping, running back and forth, and making sounds. Stereotypy is also referred to as “stimming,” which is short for self-stimulation. Why it occurs is still being debated. ABA therapy can help address the behavior when it interferes with learning or becomes harmful.
