Is My Child with Autism Ready for Potty Training?
Potty training is a momentous and exciting milestone for both parents and their children. It begins the transition from toddler to big kid. Yay, no more diapers! Then comes the work and struggles many parents experience when potty training a child. Autism just adds to the challenge.
Before starting potty training, it’s important to make sure your child is ready. Ask yourself:
• Can my child sit on the potty for five minutes, while engaged in an activity, such as singing songs, playing games, etc.?
• Can my child manage clothing, like moving training pants up and down, with some help?
• Does my child have bladder control and able to keep a diaper dry for hours?
• Does my child have a reinforcer that is highly motivating?
If your answer is yes to all of these questions, it could be time to start potty training. A great place to begin is to consult with your child’s BCBA. They should be able to add potty training to your child’s treatment plan and guide you for success at home.
